Oran Cooch is a drummer, percussionist, and educator based in East London.
With over a decade of experience in performance, recording, and teaching, he has worked across a wide range of musical settings, from live performance and session work to one-to-one and group education. He currently teaches at Blackheath Conservatoire as well as privately, and has previously worked closely with Lewisham Music and the Royal Arsenal School of Music.
Alongside his teaching work, Oran has performed at venues and festivals across the UK, including Ronnie Scott’s, WOMAD, The Great Escape, and The Roundhouse. He has also had the opportunity to perform with artists such as Guy Garvey (Elbow/BBC 6 Music) and Corinne Bailey Rae, as well as collaborate with musicians across a range of styles.
His playing spans a broad musical background, including Irish percussion, and he regularly joins sessions across London where he has played bodhrán and drums alongside musicians such as Mick O'Connor, John Gaughan, and Oli Steadman (Stornoway).
Approach to Teaching
Oran’s approach to teaching has been shaped by both music and coaching.
Alongside his work as a musician, he coaches within West Ham United’s Youth Development Phase. This has influenced how he thinks about learning, particularly the role of repetition, relevance, and environment in building confidence and supporting long-term development.
His teaching is grounded in the belief that learning an instrument is not just about technique, but about developing musical understanding, confidence, and a personal connection to music.
Whether working with beginners or more experienced players, his aim is to support each student in becoming a more confident, expressive, and independent musician.
